Reception theory
1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?
The preferred reading is what the directors want the audience believe. The main message or ideology
2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?
The oppositional reading is when the consumer take in the opposite message of what the directors want them to believe.
3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?
The teenage characters are portrayed as violent and unhinged, this can allow the audience to respond in a way which has a mix of fear and anger toward the violence that is being shown
4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?
Young people may reject this reading and construct oppositional reading as they may believe that the ideology stereotypes young people and violent and destructive when only a select few behave as shown in the trailer
5) Write a 150+ word analysis of the McDonald's advert using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.
The preferred reading for this advert is for the consumer to believe that McDonalds are giving consumers their moneys worth for "a meal disguised as a sandwich" and how its good quality for the price they are charging. The negotiated reading for the advert is some may not believe or be satisfied with the advert but still believe it to some part, like how it can be "a meal disguised as a sandwich" or "its as good as it is big" and vice versa meaning some can think its a meal but some don't some can think its good and big but others don't. Finally the oppositional reading for the advert can be completely denied by consumers as they may believe McDonalds is advertising fake products and how it may not be a meal but something light or it is not good nor big. completely disagreeing with the message of the advert.
